Dr. Wright was an inspiration to the thousands of students he served and many administrators he mentored. He was truly a leader and catalyst in the Polk County School District for over 25 years. His great love for people led him into a career that exceeded far beyond what any earthly person would imagine. He would often say, "It was all for the children."
Dr. Wright was a native of Bartow, Florida and graduated from Bartow High School. His teaching career began at Kathleen Middle School, he then became the Principal at Kathleen Middle School and Kathleen High School. He was later appointed to an Area Superintendent position in Polk County Schools. His untimely death brought about the end of his career as the Superintendent of Lake Wales Charter Schools.
The prestigious awards and recognitions Dr. Wright received are testaments to his commitment and dedication to the children in Polk County. He was named Florida High School Principal of the Year, Boss of the Year by the American Business Women's Association, Listed in the "Who's Who Among Colleges and Universities". He was the recipient of the National Association for Colored People's Beacon Award, Lucy DuCharme Humanitarian Award, and received the "Heart of our Hearts" award for "Educational Leadership to Women" and the Martin Luther King 2006 "Living Legacy Award" for his commitment to diversity, education, political activism and his educational leadership.
Dr. Wright’s legacy lives on through his Foundation that provides support to schools in need. He left to cherish his memories his loving wife, Mrs. Debra S. Wright, daughters Debra Wright-Hudson and Ashlee Wright, and grand-daughter Victoria Haggins.
He left a huge footprint and had a tremendous impact on so many lives.
